A lot of guys are already doing it. Opening a chatbot at 2 a.m. because nobody else is awake and it won't judge. I get it. I built one, so I'm not here to tell you AI is the enemy.
But most of those chatbots weren't built for this. In November 2025 the American Psychological Association put out a health advisory saying general-purpose AI chatbots weren't created to deliver mental health care and shouldn't replace a qualified provider. It also warned that many are designed to agree with you, and that their ability to guide someone through a crisis is limited and unpredictable.
That doesn't make every AI a bad idea. A 2025 randomized trial from Dartmouth tested a chatbot built for the job, with clinicians watching. It enrolled 210 adults with depression, anxiety, or eating-disorder concerns. The 106 who used the chatbot reported bigger symptom improvements than the adults who waited. That wasn't PTSD, and it wasn't veterans. It was one early study, and the researchers said oversight is essential. So the honest answer is that it depends on what the thing is, how it's built, and who's watching.
Five questions before you trust any AI with the hard stuff:
- Does it tell you straight that it's AI?
- What does it do when you say something dark? It should point you to a real human. For veterans, that's the Veterans Crisis Line: dial 988, then press 1. Text 838255, or chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat.
- Does it just agree with everything? A friend who only nods isn't much of a friend.
- Where does what you type go? Read the privacy policy. Ours too.
- Is it trying to be your only connection, or is it pushing you back toward people?
Where Coach Jeff fits.
He's AI, built on a real veteran's life and voice: Army Military Police, 1989 to 1997. He's not therapy, not a doctor, not the VA. He's the call in between, Tuesday to Tuesday. When it gets heavy, he points you to your people and to 988, then press 1.
If you're already seeing a counselor, keep going. If you're not, the Vet Center line is 877-927-8387, 24/7, and you'll be talking to a fellow veteran.
An early version of Coach Jeff is in the App Store now. The full app launches November 11 at 11:11 a.m. Eastern. Details at coachjeff.ai.
